Admiral Vasile Urseanu Astronomical Observatory

Despre acest obiectiv

## A landmark of science and history in the heart of Bucharest The Admiral Vasile Urseanu Astronomical Observatory is one of the few places in Bucharest where the sky becomes accessible to the general public, blending science with history. Founded in 1910 by Admiral Vasile Urseanu, an astronomy enthusiast, the observatory was the first of its kind in Romania, dedicated to both research and education. The building, located on Lascăr Catargiu Boulevard, bears the imprint of the Neo-Romanian style, with decorative elements inspired by traditional architecture but adapted to its scientific function. ## Architecture and historic instruments Designed by architect and engineer Ion D. Berindey, the observatory impresses with its circular tower, topped with a movable metal dome essential for astronomical observations. Inside, the main telescope, a 1910 Zeiss refractor, remains functional to this day and is one of the oldest instruments of its kind in Eastern Europe. The observation hall retains the atmosphere of the early 20th century, with original furniture and informative panels that reconstruct the evolution of Romanian astronomy. ## Visitor guide The observatory is open to the public on clear evenings, with the schedule updated periodically on the institution’s website. Visitors can participate in guided astronomical observation sessions, where specialists explain celestial phenomena visible through the telescope. Access is ticket-based, with reduced rates for pupils and students. The building also hosts temporary exhibitions related to astronomy or space exploration, complementing the scientific experience with cultural perspectives. For an optimal visit, advance booking is recommended, especially during periods of intense astronomical activity.
