## A Biodiversity Oasis in the Heart of Transylvania The Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden in Cluj-Napoca, located at 42 Republicii Street, is one of Romania’s most valuable green spaces, both scientifically and aesthetically. Founded in 1920, it spans 14 hectares and houses approximately 10,000 species and varieties of plants, organized into distinct sections, each with a well-defined role in the conservation and presentation of flora. ## Vegetal Architecture and Thematic Compartments The garden is structured into several sectors, each dedicated to a specific type of vegetation. The ornamental sector impresses with its diversity, hosting over 120 taxa of tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils in spring, followed by around 350 varieties of roses and garden flowers such as *Tagetes*, *Zinnia*, *Dahlia*, and *Gladiolus* in the summer season. The phytogeographic compartment offers a journey through Romania’s regions and the world: from the vegetation specific to the Carpathians and the Black Sea coastline to the Japanese garden, designed in the traditional *gyo-no-niwa* style, or the Roman garden, also known as Pliny’s garden, dominated by a statue of the goddess Ceres and framed by two ancient sarcophagi discovered in Napoca. The systematic compartment, covering 4 hectares, groups the most important plant families, while the economic sector presents useful species: food, technical, fodder, melliferous, and dye plants. Medicinal plants, cultivated in a dedicated sector, complete this diversity, offering an insight into local therapeutic traditions. ## Greenhouses and Scientific Collections The garden features two greenhouse complexes, where plants from equatorial, tropical, and subtropical zones are cultivated. The large greenhouse complex includes six distinct compartments: the aquatic plants greenhouse, the palm greenhouse, the Mediterranean and Australian greenhouse, the succulent and bromeliad greenhouse, as well as the fern and orchid greenhouse. These spaces recreate specific microclimates, allowing visitors to discover rare exotic species. Of particular interest are the Herbarium and the Botanical Museum. The Herbarium, with over 655,000 sheets from around the world, represents an invaluable scientific resource, while the museum offers a perspective on the evolution of botany and Romania’s vegetal heritage. ## Short Visitor’s Guide The Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden is open to the public year-round, with each season bringing new reasons for exploration. Spring and summer are the most recommended periods for visiting, when flowers are in full bloom. Access is through the main entrance on Republicii Street, and the routes are marked to facilitate orientation. Visitors can choose between self-guided walks or guided tours, which provide details about rare species and the garden’s history.
