Despre acest obiectiv
## A Museum of the Baia Mare Art Colony The **Baia Mare County Art Museum – The Artistic Center of Baia Mare** opens its doors in a building of historical significance, located at 8 1 Mai Street, just 200 meters from the old town center. Constructed in 1784, the building initially served as the **Salt Office of Maramureș**, reflecting the economic importance of the region’s salt mines. Later, it became the property of lawyer Dr. Teogil Dragoș before being transformed into a space dedicated to art. The architecture of the building blends Baroque elements with regional details, preserving balanced proportions and soberly ornamented façades. Thick walls, tall windows, and a hipped roof lend the edifice a solemn air, befitting its role as the home of an exceptional collection. ## A Unique Collection in Romania The museum stands out for its singular character: it exclusively exhibits works created by artists who were active in the **Baia Mare Artistic Colony**, from its founding in 1896 to the present day. Established by Hungarian and Austrian painters, the colony attracted numerous Romanian and foreign artists over time, becoming a reference center for Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in Central and Eastern Europe. The collection comprises over **3,300 pieces**, of which approximately **250 are permanently displayed**, signed by **90 artists** recognized at both national and international levels. Among them are **Simon Hollósy, Károly Ferenczy, János Thorma**, as well as Romanians such as **Octavian Smigelschi and Aurel Popp**. The works capture Maramureș landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits, illustrating the stylistic evolution of the colony’s artists over the decades. ## Visitor Guide The museum is open from **Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM**, with the last entry at **4:30 PM**. Admission tickets are affordable, with discounts available for students, pupils, and seniors. The exhibitions are organized thematically, guiding visitors through the developmental stages of the artistic colony, from its Impressionist beginnings to modern trends. The building is accessible to visitors with disabilities, and staff provide additional information about the works and artists. Nearby, visitors can explore the historic center of Baia Mare, with attractions such as **Ștefan’s Tower** and the **Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral**, completing the cultural experience.
