## A Museum Rooted in Baia Mare’s Passion The Baia Mare Ethnography and Folk Art Museum opened its doors in 1904, but its story began five years earlier with the founding of the "Baia Mare Museum Association" under the initiative of local intellectuals and collectors. Members of the association donated or persuaded other enthusiasts to contribute valuable objects, laying the foundation for a collection that would eventually exceed 7,000 pieces, many of which are now recognized as national treasures. This collective effort reflects the civic spirit of the city in the early 20th century, when Baia Mare emerged as a vibrant cultural hub in northern Transylvania. ## A Building with a Dual Identity: From Theater to Museum Today, the museum operates in the former Summer Theater building, an edifice that preserves the memory of Baia Mare’s golden age of artistic life. Constructed at the end of the 19th century, the building blends eclectic elements with details specific to local architecture, adapted to the needs of an open-air performance space. After its transformation into a museum, the interior was reorganized to host permanent and temporary exhibitions across approximately 500 square meters. One of the most significant modernizations was the creation of a restoration workshop in the former projection booths, a space essential for preserving the heritage. ## What the Museum’s Collection Hides The museum’s exhibitions offer a journey into traditional Maramureș life through household objects, agricultural tools, folk costumes, and regional adornments. Among the key pieces are glass icons, decorative ceramics, and handcrafted textiles, showcasing the skill of local artisans. The museum also regularly organizes workshops and cultural events designed to bring the public closer to the ethnographic values of the region. ## A Short Guide for Visitors The museum is located at 1 Dealul Florilor Street, a short distance from Baia Mare’s historic center. The visiting schedule is displayed at the entrance, and admission is available for a fee, with discounts for students and seniors. For a complete experience, it is recommended to combine the visit with a walk through the old town, where numerous historic buildings are preserved. The museum is also accessible to people with disabilities, thanks to ramps and adapted spaces.
