## Bănița Dacian Fortress – A Strategic Stronghold in the Heart of the Orăștie Mountains Located on the summit of Piatra Cetății hill at an altitude of 904 meters, Bănița Dacian Fortress is one of the most impressive fortifications of the Dacian kingdom and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 1st century BCE, the fortress played a crucial role in Dacia’s defensive system, controlling access to the capital, Sarmizegetusa Regia. The loss of this strategic position facilitated the advance of the Roman army, marking a pivotal moment in the Dacian-Roman wars. ## Architecture and Military Ingenuity The fortress’s defensive system stands out for its originality, adapted to the rugged terrain. The enclosure walls, towers, and fighting platforms are arranged in tiers, following the natural contour of the hill. The main entrance, located in the northeast, was protected by a gate and a monumental limestone staircase, 4.5 meters long, flanked by andesite walls that served as railings. The interior of the fortress was organized on three terraces, with spaces dedicated to defense and habitation. Excess rainwater was drained through two channels carved into the rock on the southern and western sides. A distinctive feature is the alignment-type sanctuary discovered outside the walls, suggesting the site’s religious and ceremonial significance. The materials used—local stone and andesite—reflect the adaptation to the area’s natural resources, giving the fortress a unique character within the landscape of Dacian fortifications. ## Practical Visitor Guide Bănița Fortress is located near the village of Bănița, accessible via county road DJ668A. From the base of the hill, the ascent to the fortress is made via a marked pedestrian trail, taking approximately 20-30 minutes. Visitors can explore the fortified terraces, the monumental staircase, and the remnants of the walls, with informative panels placed along the route.
