## A Symbol of the Transylvanian Renaissance on the Banks of the Târnava Mică Bethlen-Haller Castle stands 66 km from Alba Iulia, in the commune of Cetatea de Baltă, overlooking the tranquil banks of the Târnava Mică River. Initially built in the 16th century, the edifice took its current form between 1615 and 1624, when Prince Gabriel Bethlen radically reconstructed it after the Renaissance model of France’s Chambord Castle. This French influence is evident in its symmetrical structure, elegant towers, and interior decorations, which blend Gothic elements with those specific to the Transylvanian Renaissance. A new phase of transformation occurred between 1769 and 1773, when the ensemble was reconfigured in the Baroque style. During this period, refined ornamental details were added, and the park was landscaped according to the principles of the era. A surrounding wall, complete with a monumental gate, enhances the ensemble, lending it prestige and intimacy. ## From Noble Residence to Symbol of Cultural Resilience Over the centuries, the castle has served various purposes, reflecting the social and political changes of the region. It has functioned as a kindergarten, prison, canteen, winery, and even a champagne production facility, adapting to the needs of the local community. Local legends speak of the ghost of Count Haller, who was killed in 1927 by his chauffeur and is said to still haunt the castle’s long, silent halls, adding an air of mystery to the place. After the grandson of the last Count Haller sold the property in the 20th century, the castle came into the possession of the family that now owns the Jidvei brand. In 2003, extensive restoration and refurbishment work began, aimed at reviving the ensemble’s former splendor. ## Brief Visitor’s Guide Although it is privately owned, Bethlen-Haller Castle can be visited by request, offering a fascinating glimpse into the history and architecture of Transylvania. Access is via county road DJ107, and parking is available near the enclosure. Visitors are advised to contact the administrators in advance to schedule a visit, allowing them to explore both the richly decorated interiors and the historic park. A stop here is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known but essential chapter of Romania’s cultural heritage.
