## Blidaru Fortress – The Unconquered Dacian Stronghold Located at an altitude of 705 meters on a strategic plateau 4 km from the village of Costești, Blidaru Fortress is one of the most remarkable Dacian fortifications, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its ruins cover 6,000 square meters, revealing the military and architectural brilliance of the Geto-Dacian civilization. ## Architecture and Defensive Ingenuity The fortress comprises two distinct enclosures, built in different phases. The first, situated on the highest point of the plateau, consisted of four corner towers and an inner tower, which served both as a residence and an observation point. The second fortress, added later, incorporated three of the existing towers and added a single additional tower. The walls, constructed from stone bound with earth, protected small chambers for sheltering defenders and storing grain and water. The most remarkable feature is the unique cistern in the Dacian world, with impressive dimensions: 8 x 6.20 meters and a height of 4 meters. Its walls were waterproofed with a layer of lime, sand, and crushed brick, ensuring water reserves during sieges. This structure, combined with its strategic position and construction techniques, made Blidaru an almost impregnable fortress. ## A Symbol of Dacian Resistance Blidaru Fortress is the only Dacian fortification that was never conquered by the Romans. Its defenders resisted until their resources were completely exhausted, abandoning the position only when food and water ran out. This resilience transformed it into a symbol of Dacian military ingenuity, where every structural element served a defensive purpose. ## Visitor’s Guide Access is via a 30-minute pedestrian trail from the village of Costești, following a well-marked forest road. Visitors can explore the ruins of the two fortresses, the cistern, and the foundations of the interior chambers, while admiring the panoramic view of the Orăștie Mountains. For a complete experience, it is recommended to combine the visit with other Dacian fortresses in the area, such as Sarmizegetusa Regia or Costești.
