## Bogdana Monastery – The Cradle of Medieval Moldavia Bogdana Monastery in Rădăuți stands as a symbol of the beginnings of the medieval Moldavian state, being the oldest religious stone construction in the region. Founded between 1359 and 1364 by Voivode Bogdan I, the founder of Moldavia, the church has withstood Tatar invasions, looting, and changes in domination, preserving its original form to this day. The first rulers of Moldavia, from Bogdan I to Alexander the Good, were buried here, transforming it into a princely necropolis of reference. Between 1479 and 1482, Stephen the Great commissioned funerary slabs carved with Slavonic inscriptions for the tombs of the six voivodes, consolidating the monastery’s role as a witness to national history. ## Architecture and Painting – A Synthesis of Styles The Church of "Saint Nicholas" impresses with its basilical plan, featuring Romanesque-Gothic influences, and is unique in Moldavian architecture due to the absence of towers. Over the centuries, the interior painting has been restored several times: the first layer likely dates back to the time of Alexander the Good, followed by interventions in 1558 (under Alexander Lăpușneanu), 1745–1750, and 1880 (in tempera). The monastic complex also includes a bell tower built in 1781 and a parish house from 1876, both classified as historical monuments. ## From Secularization to Spiritual Renaissance Under Habsburg domination (1775–1782), the monastery was transformed into an episcopal church, then functioned as a parish church until the 20th century, when the communist regime closed it. Reopened in 1992, the monastery entered a new phase of flourishing, culminating in 1998 with the consecration of a new church dedicated to "Saint Hierarch Leontie of Rădăuți." The relics of this saint, bishop of Rădăuți during Alexander the Good’s reign and founder of the Laura Hermitage, are preserved in the narthex of the old church. ## Short Visitor’s Guide Bogdana Monastery is located at 6 Bogdan Vodă Street in the center of Rădăuți and is accessible year-round.
