## Cacica Salt Mine – A Subterranean Treasure of Bucovina Hidden in the heart of Cacica village, 18 km from Gura Humorului and 40 km from Suceava, the salt mine is one of Romania’s oldest and most spectacular salt extraction sites. Discovered in 1780, official mining began in 1798, making it unique in the country due to its extraction method: the galleries were dug entirely by hand, leaving behind an impressive labyrinth of over 8,200 corridors, preserved intact to this day. Access to the underground is gained by descending 200 wooden steps, leading visitors into a fascinating world where salt becomes a medium for art and spirituality. At the entrance, the salt sculpture "Crucified Jesus" greets visitors with its remarkable sensitivity. Along the galleries, the Roman Catholic Chapel of "Saint Barbara," built in 1806, impresses with its simplicity and sobriety. Every December 4th, a *Te Deum* is held here. Nearby, the Orthodox chapel houses religious bas-reliefs carved directly into the salt rock, with the icon of Saint Daniel the Hesychast watching over the faithful. ## Attractions and Underground Experiences At a depth of 35 meters, the Salt Lake, artificially created by miners, shimmers under the glow of reflectors, evoking memories of the once-popular raft rides that delighted visitors. The Dance Hall, also known as the "Eng. Agripa Popescu Hall," is located 37 meters underground. This spacious 24-by-12-meter hall, with balconies carved into the salt, once hosted balls and performances. Today, visitors can engage in sports in a specially designed hall or relax in the saltwater pool near the mine. Beyond its historical and architectural charm, Cacica Salt Mine boasts remarkable therapeutic potential. The air, rich in salt aerosols, is recommended for respiratory conditions. With reserves that could supply Europe for 400 years, this monument to human labor and ingenuity remains an unmissable destination for those eager to uncover the hidden beauties of Bucovina.
