Despre acest obiectiv
## A Volcanic Giant in the Heart of the Eastern Carpathians Călimani National Park spans 23,708 hectares in the northern part of the Eastern Carpathians, covering territories across four counties: Suceava, Mureș, Bistrița-Năsăud, and Harghita. It is Romania’s most extensive volcanic massif, dominated by peaks exceeding 2,000 meters and home to the country’s largest extinct volcanic crater, with a diameter of approximately 10 kilometers. The geological landscape is sculpted by wind, rain, and frost, giving rise to spectacular anthropomorphic and zoomorphic formations, such as those found in the 12 Apostles Reserve. ## Biodiversity and Natural Habitats The park was established to conserve its unique flora and fauna, protecting one-of-a-kind habitats. Vegetation is structured in layers: at the foothills, meadows and pastures; followed by mixed forests of beech, fir, and spruce; and at higher altitudes, dwarf pine thickets and rare species like the Swiss pine (*Pinus cembra*), a glacial relict. The fauna includes bears, deer, wolves, martens, and birds such as the western capercaillie and hazel grouse. Scientific reserves—Jnepenișul cu Pinus cembra, Lake Iezer, and 12 Apostoli—shelter fragile ecosystems essential to the region’s balance. ## Trails and Access Access to the park is via localities such as Gura Haitii (Șaru Dornei commune), a starting point for equestrian tourism and hiking. Marked trails vary in difficulty and duration: from 4-hour walks (Sat Dornisoara – Izvoarele Dornei) to 18-21-hour expeditions (the 12 Apostles circuit). Attractions like the Tihu and Bâuca waterfalls, Pintea’s Spring, and the Red Rocks enhance the park’s offerings. Park administration recommends appropriate gear and checking weather conditions, with camping permitted only in designated areas. ## Legends and Cultural Heritage The Călimani Mountains are steeped in history and myth. Ancient Dacian rituals are said to have taken place on the altars of Lucaciu Peak, while the Sun Cult inspired the Nedeia of Călimani, a festival blending ancient traditions with Orthodox symbols. Local legends speak of the outlaw Pintea, whose palm print is said to be imprinted on the rock at Apa Rece. Today, the park offers diverse activities, from photo safaris and birdwatching to guided hikes and horseback rides along the volcanic ridge.
