## Cantacuzino Castle – The Neo-Romanian Jewel at the Foot of the Bucegi Mountains ## History and Founding Built between 1901 and 1908 on the site of an old hunting lodge belonging to the family, the castle bears the signature of Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, a prominent political figure of interwar Romania – mayor of Bucharest, minister, prime minister, and president of the Conservative Party. The project was entrusted to architect Grigore Cerchez, who blended the Neo-Romanian style with decorative elements inspired by the Italian Renaissance and French Baroque. The nearby church, brought from Maramureș, was consecrated in the presence of Queen Marie, strengthening the link between the noble residence and the Romanian monarchy. ## Architecture and Interior Decorations The ensemble spans 3,148 square meters of built space, with a courtyard and garden covering 3.5 hectares, complemented by 970 hectares of forest. The four structures – the central pavilion, the service pavilion, the administrative villa, and the chapel – form a harmonious complex, dominated by crenelated towers and open loggias. The interior impresses with its wealth of details: ornamental and figurative painting, stained glass, coffered ceilings with floral motifs, wrought iron or carved wood balustrades, Carrara marble staircases, and decorative tile flooring. The ballroom houses a unique heraldry collection, featuring the coats of arms of families related to the Cantacuzinos, while the upper floor has hosted the castle’s Art Gallery since 2015. ## Gardens and Visitor Facilities The garden, designed with grottoes, artesian fountains, and cascades, recreates the atmosphere of a romantic park. Visitors can explore an adventure trail with zip lines or enjoy French cuisine at the castle’s restaurant. The visiting schedule is flexible: Monday to Thursday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Friday to Sunday until 7:00 PM. Access is from the Zamora neighborhood, just a few minutes from the center of Bușteni, along DN1. The castle is a 10-minute walk from Bușteni train station and a 5-minute walk from the cable car that ascends to Babele and the Sphinx.
