## Cernica Monastery ā A Spiritual Oasis at the Gates of Bucharest Perched on a picturesque island in the middle of Lake Cernica, the monastery of the same name stands just 12 kilometers from Bucharest, in the commune of Pantelimon. Documented as early as 1608 in a decree issued by Prince Radu VodÄ Čerban, the monastery was initially known as "GrÄdiČtea Florilor" (Flower Fortress), reflecting the natural beauty of its surroundings. Over the centuries, it has become a prominent spiritual center, closely linked to notable figures of the Romanian Orthodox Church. ## Architecture and Successive Restorations The monastic complex comprises three churches, each with a distinct history. The main church, dedicated to "Saint Great Martyr George," was rebuilt after the 1802 earthquake by Abbot Timotei and completed in 1815 during the reign of Ioan Gheorghe Caragea. Its architectural style blends traditional Romanian elements with neoclassical influences, evident in the interior decorations and the robust structure designed to withstand earthquakes. The quakes of 1838 and 1840 severely damaged the monastery, necessitating extensive restoration work, the last of which took place between 1965 and 1967. On Saint Nicholas Island stands the church of "Saint Lazarus," built in 1804 as a cemetery church. It houses the lower chamber of tombs, a place of reflection for monks and pilgrims. Within the monastery grounds, the church dedicated to "Saint Great Hierarch Nicholas" completes the complex, offering a space for prayer and meditation. ## Saint Calinic and the Spiritual Legacy Cernica Monastery is closely tied to the figure of Saint Calinic of Cernica, one of the most revered Romanian saints. He served as the monasteryās abbot in the 19th century, contributing to the revival of monastic life after the decline caused by wars and epidemics. In 1781, under his guidance, the monastic community was restored, and the monastery once again became a beacon of spirituality and culture. Nearby, archaeological excavations conducted between 1960 and 1974 uncovered the foundations of the Vorniceasa Skete, built by Vorniceasa Chiajna, the wife of Vornic Cernica Čtirbei. The discovery of her remains, authenticated by a ring, added another layer of history to the site. ## Short Guide for Visitors Cernica Monastery is accessible via county road DJ100, from Bucharest toward Pantelimon. Visitors can explore the churches, the monastic cemetery, and the monastery museum, which houses old icons, manuscripts, and religious artifacts. The lake and surrounding forests provide a tranquil setting for walks, and nearby PasÄrea Monastery is another spiritual site of interest. The visiting schedule is adapted to religious services, and access is free, with the option to make donations for the monasteryās upkeep.
