Despre acest obiectiv
## Chioar Citadel – A Medieval Fortress Overlooking the Lăpuș Valley Chioar Citadel stands atop an isolated hill, rising over 400 meters above sea level, commanding the gorge carved by the Lăpuș River between the rocky surroundings of Remetea Chioarului. Its strategic position, encircled by water and natural cliffs, transformed it into a key defensive and control point in the valley since the Middle Ages. Though likely built in the 13th century, the first documented mention dates to 1319, when the citadel began to establish its role as a noble residence and military outpost in northern Transylvania. ## A Legacy of the Maramureș Voivodes In 1378, the citadel and its surrounding domain were granted to the brothers Balc, Drag, and Ioan, descendants of Voivode Dragoș of Maramureș, marking the beginning of the family’s rule, which lasted until the extinction of its final branch. This connection to the Maramureș dynasty underscores the importance of Chioar Citadel within the network of fortifications protecting the northern borders of the voivodeship. A pivotal moment in its history occurred between 1599 and 1600, when Michael the Brave, during his campaign to unify the Romanian principalities, received the citadel and its domain, temporarily integrating them into his territories. ## Architecture and Access Today The ruins of the citadel preserve traces of a structure adapted to the rugged terrain, featuring thick stone walls and observation towers positioned on the most exposed sides. The irregularly shaped inner enclosure was likely divided into living quarters, storage spaces, and a chapel, though architectural details remain fragmented due to advanced deterioration. Access is via a forest road ascending from the village of Remetea Chioarului, covering approximately 3 kilometers to the base of the hill. From there, a marked pedestrian trail leads visitors through the ruins, offering panoramic views of the Lăpuș Valley and the surrounding forested hills. Though it has not undergone extensive restoration, Chioar Citadel remains a site rich in history, ideal for archaeology enthusiasts and lovers of wild landscapes.
