## A Brâncușian corner of the world in the heart of Gorj The Constantin Brâncuși Memorial House in Hobita preserves the memory of the place where one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century was born in 1876. Although the current building is a faithful reconstruction of the artist’s parental home – the original having been moved to the village center to house the "Constantin Brâncuși" Museum – it authentically recreates the modest and charming atmosphere of the artist’s childhood. Built around 1870 by his father, Nicolae Brâncuși, the house reflects the traditional Gorj architecture of the late 19th century, with influences specific to the hilly and forested region of Oltenia. ## Architecture and interior atmosphere The simple and functional construction comprises three modest rooms, organized around a central chamber with a traditional hearth, featuring a rear *corlată* (a built-in bench). The façade is dominated by a generous porch, supported by wooden pillars lightly carved at the ends, a characteristic element of the region’s peasant houses. The entrance to the porch is flanked by two massive pillars, adding a touch of monumentality to the humble dwelling. Inside, the original furniture – peasant beds, dowry chests, bowls, and traditional tools – evokes the daily life of a Gorj farming family. The cellar, accessible to visitors, completes the picture of a bygone rural household. ## A journey into Brâncuși’s universe The museum houses a valuable collection of personal items belonging to the Brâncuși family, as well as documents, letters, photographs, and albums illustrating the sculptor’s life and work. Among the exhibits are reproductions of famous works, as well as original pieces that belonged to the artist. Just 150 meters from the house, the Constantin Brâncuși Sculpture Camp enhances the cultural experience, hosting works by international contemporary artists inspired by Brâncuși’s spirit. Visitors can thus explore not only the birthplace of the sculptural genius but also how his legacy continues to inspire generations of creators. ## Practical visitor’s guide The memorial house is located on the county road connecting Târgu Jiu to Tismana, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the county seat. The visiting schedule is seasonally adjusted, and access is ticket-based. For a complete experience, it is recommended to combine the visit with other Brâncuși-related sites in the area, such as the Monumental Ensemble in Târgu Jiu or the "Constantin Brâncuși" Museum in Hobita. The village itself, with its traditional houses and picturesque landscapes, provides an authentic setting for understanding the roots of Brâncuși’s art.
