Despre acest obiectiv
## A Rock-Hewn Ascetic Haven Corbii de Piatră Monastery stands on the left bank of the Doamnei River, just 400 meters from the center of Corbi village, in a landscape dominated by massive cliffs. Recognized as one of Romania’s oldest ascetic sites, the monastery is part of a "mysterious triangle" of rock-hewn churches in Muscel, alongside Cetățuia Negru Vodă Monastery and Nămăiești Monastery, all located approximately 20 kilometers apart. Historically known as the *Schitul din Jghiab* (Hermitage of the Gorge), the monastery was carved into a 30-meter-high and 14.5-meter-long cliff face. Its first documented mention dates to 1512, when it was reestablished and dedicated to Prince Neagoe Basarab, gaining the status of a princely monastery. It also became the first documented convent for nuns in Wallachia. ## Byzantine Architecture and Iconography The value of Corbii de Piatră Monastery lies not only in its unique integration into the rock but also in its interior frescoes, considered by experts to be one of the purest expressions of 14th-century Byzantine tradition. The monastery’s patron saint, the *Dormition of the Mother of God*, reflects the profound spirituality of the site. Above the church, embedded in the cliff, stands a stone cross from 1700, while in front of the entrance, a wooden chapel with a bell tower was erected in 1890. Nearby, approximately 280 meters away, lies the rock of the outlaw Zdrelea, a legendary figure of the region, adding a touch of local folklore to the site. ## Visitor’s Guide Access to the monastery is via a paved path starting from the center of Corbi village. Visitors can explore both the rock-hewn church and the wooden chapel, while those interested in local legends can take a short walk to Zdrelea’s Rock. The monastery is open daily, and the tranquility and natural beauty of its surroundings make it an ideal place for reflection and historical discovery.
