Despre acest obiectiv

## Cotmeana Monastery – The Cradle of Wallachian Monasticism Perched on the rolling hills of Argeș, at the crossroads between Râmnicu Vâlcea and Pitești, Cotmeana Monastery preserves the memory of the earliest centuries of Orthodox faith in Wallachia. Documented in 1388 during the reign of Mircea the Elder, the monastery traces its origins to a wooden church built, according to tradition, by Radu I in 1292. This monastic hearth is considered the oldest in the principality, a witness to the passage of time and historical transformations. Its name may derive from the Cumans, nomadic tribes that roamed these lands during the Middle Ages, leaving behind a name that has endured to this day. The feudal complex, restored in 1711 by Constantin Brâncoveanu, includes the main church, a defensive tower, a bell tower, and enclosure walls with loopholes, reflecting the monastery’s dual role—both spiritual and fortified. ## Architecture and Heritage Treasures The old church, dedicated to the "Annunciation" and the "Beheading of St. John the Baptist," impresses with its exposed brick façades and Byzantine-Balkan decorative elements, characteristic of the 13th–14th centuries. The chapel, dedicated to the "Protection of the Mother of God," adds a touch of intimacy and contemplation to the ensemble. The monastery’s heritage houses one of the country’s most valuable relics: the oldest bell in Wallachia, donated in 1385 by the nobleman Dragomir. Archaeological excavations have also uncovered a treasure of gold coins and ornamental terracotta discs, now displayed at the Argeș County Museum, bearing witness to monastic life and cultural exchanges of the era. ## A Brief Visitor’s Guide Cotmeana Monastery is located 30 km east of Râmnicu Vâlcea and 32 km northwest of Pitești, accessible via the national road connecting the two cities. The visiting schedule aligns with the monastic rhythm, and pilgrims and tourists are welcomed with hospitality. Within the inner courtyard, the ancient walls and defensive tower offer a journey through history, while the church and chapel invite prayer and reflection. For those interested in archaeological details, the Argeș County Museum complements the experience with exhibits showcasing the spiritual and material richness of this sacred place.
