Despre acest obiectiv

## Cozia Monastery – A Medieval Landmark and Symbol of Romanian Culture Cozia Monastery, located on the banks of the Olt River in Călimănești, Vâlcea County, is one of the most significant medieval foundations in Wallachia. Built between 1387 and 1391 by Prince Mircea the Elder, the monastery is dedicated to the "Holy Trinity" and houses the tomb of the ruler, alongside that of Michael the Brave’s mother. Its name, interpreted by the 17th-century traveler Paul of Aleppo, suggests a natural fortress, shielded by the towering mountains of the region. ## Architecture and Artistic Influences The monastery’s main church impresses with its façade decorations, unique in Wallachian architecture. Stone rosettes, the alternation of brick and stone, and vertical frames reflect the influence of the Serbian Morava School, akin to the Lazarica Church. The interior frescoes, painted between 1390 and 1391, preserve original fragments from the founder’s era, while the porch added by Constantin Brâncoveanu in 1706–1707 completes the ensemble in the Brâncovenesc style. Over the centuries, the monastery has been restored by rulers such as Neagoe Basarab and Radu Paisie, who also built the infirmary "Holy Apostles" (1542–1543), decorated with frescoes by the masters David and Raduslav. ## A Cultural and Spiritual Center Cozia has been a hub of Romanian culture since 1415, when a monastic school led by Abbot Sofronie operated here. Filos the Logothete, the first attested Romanian poet, composed religious verses at this site, and in 1696, Mardarie Cozianul compiled the *Slavo-Romanian Lexicon*. The monastery’s museum houses treasures such as the *Gospel* printed by Metropolitan Varlaam (1644) and Dosoftei’s *Psalter in Verse* (1673). The healing spring and Neagoe Basarab’s fountain further enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the complex. ## Visitor’s Guide Accessible 20 km from Râmnicu Vâlcea and 5 km from Călimănești, the monastery can be visited according to the schedule posted at the entrance. The narthex contains the tombs of Mircea the Elder and Teodora, the mother of Michael the Brave, while the museum displays religious artifacts, manuscripts, and ancient coins. The infirmary "Holy Apostles" and the churches "Dormition of the Mother of God" and "All Saints’ Sunday" complete the tour. Visitors are advised to respect the tranquility and norms of conduct in sacred spaces.
