## A Palace of Art in the Heart of Oltenia The Craiova Art Museum opens its doors in a building with historical resonance: the Jean Mihail Palace, constructed between 1900 and 1907 as the residence of a wealthy family in the city. The eclectic style of the edifice, blending neoclassical and baroque elements, reflects the era’s taste for opulence and elegance while maintaining a sobriety specific to Oltenian architecture. The symmetrical façade, with fine sculptural details and tall windows, gives the building a monumental air, while the carefully restored interior now houses one of the region’s most valuable art collections. ## A Collection Born of Generosity The museum has operated in this location since 1954, but its roots stretch back to the 19th century, when it functioned as a pinacotheca under the "Alexandru and Aretia Aman" Foundation. The initial collection, donated by the Aman family, was enriched over the decades through acquisitions and new donations, now totaling over 4,000 works. The heritage is structured into two main sections: the Romanian Art Gallery, featuring works by Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Constantin Lecca, and Ștefan Luchian, and the Universal Art Gallery, which brings together masterpieces from Dutch, Flemish, French, and Italian schools. Among the reference pieces are works attributed to Constantin Brâncuși, offering visitors an insight into the evolution of European art. ## Visitor Guide The museum is located at 15 Unirii Street, in the heart of Craiova, just minutes away from other cultural landmarks such as the "Marin Sorescu" National Theatre and Romanescu Park. The visiting schedule is public-friendly: Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM), and it is closed on Mondays. Tickets are affordably priced, with discounts available for students, pupils, and seniors. Temporary exhibitions, organized periodically, complement the permanent collection, highlighting contemporary artists or unique themes.
