Despre acest obiectiv
## Dacian Fortress of Piatra Craivii – The Stone Fortress of King Decebal ## A Strategic Position in the Heart of the Trascău Mountains Built at an altitude of 1,083 meters on a steep cliff overlooking the valleys of Cricău and Bucurzei, the Dacian Fortress of Piatra Craivii is one of the most impressive ancient fortifications in Transylvania. Located nearly 20 kilometers from Alba Iulia, the fortress controls access to the Trascău Mountains, providing a strategic vantage point over the entire region. Its terraces, largely artificially constructed and supported by sturdy stone walls, demonstrate the ingenuity of the Dacian builders, who adapted their architecture to the rugged terrain. ## Architecture and Archaeological Discoveries The fortress stands out for its unique construction style, influenced by Greek craftsmen, likely brought here to strengthen the fortification’s defenses. Archaeological excavations have uncovered sanctuaries with stone foundations similar to those at Grădiștea Muncelului, as well as four wooden column bases belonging to a Dacian temple. Among the most valuable discoveries are five coins: four Roman Republican denarii, minted between 88 and 70 BCE, and a Dacian silver coin, dated to the late 3rd or early 2nd century BCE. These artifacts confirm the fortress’s importance as a political and religious center during the Dacian kingdom. ## Legends and Visitor Access Oral tradition keeps alive the legend of a fortress built by giants, with treasures hidden deep within the rock, guarded by locked gates that open only once every seven years. While the myth adds charm to the site, the historical reality is equally fascinating: it is said that after his defeat at Sarmizegetusa, King Decebal retreated here, turning Piatra Craivii into a final bastion of resistance. Access to the fortress is via a moderately difficult trail, starting from nearby villages such as Cricău or Bucerdea Vinoasă. Though challenging, the journey is rewarded by panoramic views and an atmosphere steeped in history. Visitors can explore the fortified terraces and admire the stone walls, silent witnesses to a vanished civilization that remains alive in the memory of this place.
