## A Monument Through Time in Țara Hațegului Densuș Church, located in the heart of Țara Hațegului, just a short distance from the former Roman capital Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, is one of Romania’s most enigmatic and valuable religious constructions. While the exact date of its erection remains uncertain, historians propose fascinating hypotheses: some believe it was built on the ruins of a pre-Christian Dacian edifice, others on the foundation of a temple dedicated to the god Mars, and still others see it as a mausoleum transformed into a place of worship, dedicated to the Roman general Longinus Maximus, killed by the Dacians. Nicolae Iorga places it in the 16th century, while art historian Vasile Drăguț suggests the last quarter of the 13th century. What is certain is that Densuș Church is dedicated to "Saint Nicholas" and holds the title of the oldest church in the country where religious services have been held uninterrupted. ## Architecture and Hidden Symbols The building impresses with its modest yet meaningful dimensions: 30 meters in length, 8 meters in width, and 18 meters in height, with an interior space of just 15 square meters. The materials used tell the story of a remarkable cultural synthesis: bricks with Roman inscriptions, capitals, funerary stones, drainage pipes, marble blocks, and columns recovered from the ruins of Ulpia Traiana. The altar is carved from a Roman funerary stone, its letters erased, and above it stand two lions sculpted back-to-back, symbols of power and protection. The nave is pierced by a central tower, around which unfolds a narrow space covered by a supporting vault, while the semicircular apse to the east completes the structure. The interior mural paintings, created on an ultramarine background in the 16th century, bear the simple signature of an artist named "Ștefan." Unfortunately, many of the frescoes were destroyed during the Reformation, when iconoclasm left deep traces. In the 19th century, the church was nearly demolished by locals who wanted to build a larger structure, but authorities in Budapest intervened, recognizing its value as a historical monument. ## Short Visitor’s Guide Densuș Church is located in the eponymous village, approximately 10 kilometers from the town of Hațeg and 30 kilometers from Deva. Access is via county road DJ687D, and parking is available near the church. The visiting schedule is flexible, but it is recommended to contact the parish priest to ensure access to the interior, especially outside service hours. In the area, visitors can also explore the ruins of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, Colț Fortress, or the "Pădurea Slivuț" Nature Reserve, completing a journey through the history and nature of Țara Hațegului.
