## Dominican Church of Sighișoara – The Oldest Monument of the Citadel The Dominican Church, located in the heart of the Sighișoara Citadel, is the oldest monument of this medieval town, documented as early as 1298 through an indulgence issued by Pope Boniface VIII. Originally part of a Dominican monastic complex, the church was dedicated to the Holy Virgin and served as a place of worship for the local Saxon community. Although the monastery was demolished at the end of the 19th century, the church has retained its religious function and historical value, becoming a symbol of Transylvanian cultural heritage. ## Architecture and Artistic Details The church’s construction blends elements of Transylvanian Gothic style with Baroque influences, the result of successive interventions over the centuries. The interior, sober and luminous, preserves pieces of remarkable artistic value. Among these are a bronze baptismal font cast in 1440, a stone door frame sculpted in 1570 by the craftsman Toma in Renaissance style, and 35 Oriental carpets from the 17th century, brought from various regions of the world. The Baroque altar, created in 1680 by sculptor Johann West and painted by Jeremias Stranovius, dominates the sacred space, alongside a functional Baroque organ still used today for concerts held in the church. A controversial element is the triptych in the sacristy, whose mysterious painting has sparked debates due to the depiction of an unidentified object, interpreted by some as a UFO. ## Visitor’s Guide The church is situated in Citadel Square, in the immediate vicinity of the Clock Tower, facilitating visitor access as part of a compact tourist circuit. While specific visiting hours are not explicitly mentioned, access is generally permitted during worship hours and cultural events, such as organ concerts. Entry is free, though donations are welcome for the maintenance of the monument. For a complete experience, it is recommended to combine the visit with an exploration of the Church on the Hill and the Evangelical Cemetery, accessible via the Covered Staircase, a historic structure with 175 wooden steps. The cobblestone streets of the citadel require comfortable footwear, and the medieval atmosphere is enhanced by events such as the Sighișoara Medieval Festival, held annually during the last weekend of July.
