Despre acest obiectiv

## Dragomirna Monastery – A Jewel of Medieval Moldavia Located 12 km northwest of Suceava, in the village of Mitocul Dragomirnei, Dragomirna Monastery is one of the most valuable religious foundations in Moldavia, harmoniously combining Orthodox spirituality with defensive architecture. Access is via the E85 route toward Chernivtsi, followed by a 10 km journey on DJ208D through Mitocul Dragomirnei village. ## A Foundation and History Set in Stone Built between 1608 and 1609, the monastery’s main church bears the signature of Metropolitan Anastasie Crimca, a former chancery scribe and soldier in the army of Peter the Lame. Rewarded by the prince with the Dragomirna estate, Crimca first erected a small church (1602), preserved today in the cemetery, followed by the monumental structure that impresses with its verticality. In 1627, Prince Miron Barnovschi-Movilă fortified the complex with massive walls, transforming it into the most powerful religious fortress in Moldavia. Here, between 1763 and 1775, Saint Paisie Velichkovsky, a prominent figure in Orthodox monastic life, resided. ## Unique Architecture and Spiritual Treasures The monastery’s church, dedicated to the "Descent of the Holy Spirit," is remarkable for its unusual proportions: 42 meters in height and only 9.60 meters in width, making it the tallest and narrowest in Moldavia. Nicolae Iorga described it as "a beautiful casket of holy relics," while the interior frescoes, preserved only in the nave and altar, add a touch of mystery. The narthex houses the founder’s tomb, marked by a simple stone without inscription. The museum building safeguards priceless treasures: gold and silver thread embroideries donated by Crimca, an ebony-carved cross (1542), a Gospel book with a 1557 binding, and works from the Dragomirna school of calligraphers and miniaturists. The winter church, refectory, and abbot’s quarters were also located here. ## Brief Visitor’s Guide The monastery, currently inhabited by nuns, can be visited daily while respecting the liturgical schedule. The museum is accessible between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM (summer) or 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM (winter). Parking is recommended near the fortified walls, and exploring the cemetery, where the original church of the complex is located, is highly encouraged.
