Despre acest obiectiv
## Durău Monastery – A Spiritual Oasis at the Foot of Ceahlău Hidden in the heart of the Durău balneoclimatic resort, at the foot of Mount Ceahlău, Durău Monastery rises as a symbol of faith and Orthodox tradition in northeastern Romania. Located 100 km northwest of Piatra-Neamț and 65 km west of Târgu Neamț, the monastery draws its name, according to tradition, from the Duruitoarea Waterfall, situated just 5 km away, whose tumultuous waters seem to echo the prayers of the nuns. ## Founding and Turbulent History Oral tradition attributes the establishment of the monastery to one of the daughters of Prince Vasile Lupu in the 17th century. The current church, however, was rebuilt between 1830 and 1835, funded by wealthy merchants from Piatra-Neamț, and is dedicated to the Annunciation (March 25). Over time, the monastery has served as a spiritual refuge for numerous personalities, including Metropolitan Veniamin Costache, writers Mihail Sadoveanu, Alexandru Vlahuță, and Barbu Delavrancea, and playwright Ion Luca Caragiale. ## Architecture and Sacred Art The monastery’s church impresses with its sobriety and elegance, characteristic of the 19th-century Moldavian style. The interior frescoes, painted between 1935 and 1937 by Nicolae Tonitza and his disciples—including the young Corneliu Baba—stand out for their refined technique and the expressiveness of the biblical figures. The iconostasis, carved from gilded linden wood and painted in Constantinople, adds a touch of grandeur, while the silver-plated icon of the Mother of God, dating from the 18th century, is venerated as a miracle-working icon. The bell tower, constructed from wood in the 18th century, houses a chapel and a permanent exhibition of religious art, where visitors can admire valuable pieces, such as an 18th-century iconostasis crafted in a folk style with Byzantine influences. The monastery also oversees two nearby sketes: "Saint Theodora of Sihla" and "Venerable Parascheva." ## Brief Visitor’s Guide Access to Durău Monastery is via county road DJ155C from Piatra-Neamț or Târgu Neamț, with a stop in the Durău resort. The visiting schedule is adapted to religious services, but the church and art exhibition are open to the public from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Visitors can also explore the surrounding area, including the Duruitoarea Waterfall or the mountain trails of Ceahlău, for a complete experience blending nature and spirituality.
