Despre acest obiectiv
## A Landmark of Saxon Heritage in Țara Amlașului The Fortified Church of Roșia, located in the heart of Transylvania in Sibiu County, is a striking example of medieval Saxon religious architecture adapted to the defensive needs of the community. Built in the 15th century, this place of worship reflects the late Gothic influences characteristic of the Amlaș region and bears the mark of an era when fortified churches were essential for protecting locals against invasions. ## Architecture and Defensive Elements The structure impresses with its robust design, featuring thick stone and brick walls built to withstand sieges. The bell tower, positioned on the western side, dominates the village skyline and served both as an observation point and a final refuge in times of danger. The rectangular nave is covered with a cross-ribbed vault, typical of the Gothic style, while the polygonal apse houses a simple yet well-preserved altar. The original fortifications, partially demolished over time, included an enclosure wall with corner towers and a defensive moat, of which only fragments remain today. The church’s interior retains modest decorative elements, such as the sculpted corbels of the vault and a 16th-century stone baptismal font. ## Short Visitor’s Guide The Fortified Church of Roșia is situated in the center of the eponymous village, approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Sibiu, accessible via county road DJ106A. Visitors can explore the interior during service hours or by prior arrangement with the local parish. The village itself, with its traditional Saxon houses and picturesque hilly landscape, provides an authentic setting for delving into Transylvanian history and culture. Its proximity to other tourist attractions, such as the Fortified Church of Cisnădioara or Slimnic Citadel, makes Roșia an ideal stop on a cultural tour through Țara Amlașului.
