Despre acest obiectiv
## A Symbol of the Saxon Community in the Heart of Brașov The Fortified Evangelical Church of Brașov stands as one of the most valuable testimonies to the presence of the Transylvanian Saxon community in Transylvania. Located in the historic center of the city, in close proximity to the Black Church, this Evangelical-Lutheran place of worship harmoniously combines Gothic elements with defensive fortifications, reflecting its dual role over the centuries: spiritual and protective. While the exact year of construction remains unknown, historical documents attest to the existence of a church on this site as early as the 13th century. The current Gothic structure was rebuilt and expanded during the 14th and 15th centuries, a period when Brașov experienced significant urban and economic development. The bell tower, with its four levels and tall, pyramidal roof, dominates the city's skyline and served as a strategic observation point in times of danger. ## Architecture and Distinctive Features The Fortified Evangelical Church impresses with its sobriety and functionality. The interior, illuminated by tall, narrow windows, houses an 18th-century Baroque-style pulpit and a 19th-century organ, a testament to the community's musical tradition. The rib-vaulted ceiling and ogival arches are characteristic of the late Gothic style, while the thick walls and robust buttresses emphasize the building's defensive role. The fortifications that once surrounded the church, now partially demolished, included enclosure walls, defensive towers, and a moat, essential elements for protecting the inhabitants during Ottoman invasions or interethnic conflicts. Although some of these structures no longer exist, the tower and fragments of the walls provide a clear picture of the church's strategic importance. ## Short Visitor’s Guide The Fortified Evangelical Church is located in Council Square, in the historic center of Brașov, and is easily accessible on foot from any point in the old town. The visiting schedule is adapted to religious services and cultural events, so it is recommended to check the updated hours before planning your visit. Entry is free, but donations are welcome for the maintenance of the monument. For a complete experience, visitors can combine exploring the church with a walk through the cobblestone streets of the old center, where medieval houses and an authentic atmosphere complement the site's story. Nearby, the Museum of Fortifications of Țara Bârsei offers additional context about Brașov's defensive role in the Middle Ages.
