Despre acest obiectiv
## A Symbol of the Saxon Community in Miercurea Sibiului The Fortified Evangelical Church Complex of Miercurea Sibiului stands as one of the most valuable testimonies of the Saxon heritage in Transylvania. Built in the 14th century, the edifice harmoniously combines religious and defensive functions, reflecting the community's need for protection against medieval invasions and conflicts. Originally a Catholic church, it was later taken over by the Evangelical-Lutheran community, becoming an essential spiritual and cultural center for the local Saxons. ## Architecture and Defensive Elements The Evangelical church retains distinctive Gothic features, visible in the structure of the nave and interior details such as vaulted ceilings and tall, narrow windows. The bell tower, added later, also served as an observation point, while the thick walls, equipped with battlements and a guard walkway, emphasize the fortified nature of the complex. The fortified enclosure, complete with defensive walls and corner towers, rounds out the defensive system, providing shelter for residents in times of danger. The inner courtyard houses several historic annexes, including the parsonage and the Saxon school building, which together paint a well-preserved picture of a medieval complex. The interior furnishings and decorations, though simplified following the Protestant Reformation, still retain valuable artistic elements, such as the organ and intricately carved pews. ## Short Visitor’s Guide Miercurea Sibiului is easily accessible from Sibiu via county road DJ106, approximately 30 kilometers away. The complex is located in the center of the village and is visible upon entering. Visiting hours are seasonally adjusted, and access to the church and fortified enclosure is available with a local guide or by prior appointment. Visitors can explore both the interior of the church and the defensive walls, which offer a picturesque view of the surrounding hills. A recommended stop is the village museum, which houses exhibits related to the history and traditions of the Saxon community.
