## A medieval jewel in the heart of Transylvania The Fortified Evangelical Church of Miercurea Sibiului stands proudly in the center of the village, preserving the memory of the Saxon community that shaped this region for centuries. While the exact year of its initial construction remains unknown, its fortifications and architecture suggest a medieval origin, adapted to the defensive needs of the time. The church has been restored twice, in 1877 and between 1980-1982, interventions that strengthened its structure without altering its authentic charm. ## Architecture and fortifications: an ingenious defensive system Surrounding the church is a tall, oval wall that defines the fortified enclosure. On the inner side of this wall, the guard paths and grain storage areas—essential elements during sieges—intertwine with the history of the place. The fortress consisted of two superimposed access galleries, an architectural solution designed to ensure protection and efficiency in defending the community. To the south, the gate’s defensive tower has been preserved to this day, a testament to the ingenuity of medieval builders. ## A site of cultural and spiritual pilgrimage Today, the church and its fortifications are open to visitors, offering a journey into the history and traditions of the Transylvanian Saxons. The church’s interior, simple and sober, reflects the Protestant spirit, while its walls and towers evoke times of hardship and resilience. Access is easy, as the village of Miercurea Sibiului is located just 30 kilometers from the city of Sibiu, along the European route E81. Visitors can explore both the church and the fortified enclosure, discovering architectural and historical details that make this site a remarkable tourist attraction.
