Despre acest obiectiv
## Frumoasa Monastery – A Historical and Architectural Jewel of Iași ## History and Founding Frumoasa Monastery, located on Radu Vodă Street in Iași, traces its origins to the 16th century, when it was founded by Hetman Meletie Balica. Elevated to the status of a monastery in 1618 by Prince Gavril Movilă, the establishment experienced periods of prosperity and decline. The 17th century brought the ravages of war and poor administration, leaving the church in ruins. A significant restoration took place in the 18th century under Prince Grigore II Ghica, who transformed the complex into a summer residence for his family, inspired by the Ottoman architecture of Constantinople. The last major restoration, between 1836 and 1839 under Hegumen Ioasaf Voinescu, gave the church its Ukrainian architectural style, cementing its reputation as "Frumoasa" ("The Beautiful One"). ## Architecture and Monuments The monastery complex is a historic monument of national interest, comprising several distinct elements. The Church of the Holy Archangels, rebuilt between 1836 and 1839, impresses with its Renaissance style, featuring a Doric portico at the entrance, formed by four columns and a central arch. The exterior decorations enhance its monumentality. The Palace on the Walls (1818–1819) and the ruins of the Princesses’ Palace, along with the Bell Tower and the surrounding wall (1726–1733), complete the architectural landscape. The Mausoleum of Grigore Sturdza adds a solemn touch. In the 19th century, the monastery was one of the wealthiest in Moldavia until the secularization of monastic estates in 1863. ## Access and Visiting Frumoasa Monastery, now a convent for nuns, is open to the public for visits and prayer. The feast days of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the Dormition of the Mother of God attract pilgrims and tourists alike.
