Despre acest obiectiv
## A Jewel of Late 16th-Century Moldavian Architecture Galata Monastery Church, perched on Miroslava Hill in Iași, stands as one of the most valuable foundations of Prince Petru Șchiopul (Peter the Lame), constructed between 1583 and 1584. Its dedication, "The Ascension of the Lord," reflects the spiritual importance of the site, which served both as a place of prayer and a princely necropolis. In 1588, Lady Maria Amirali of Rhodes, the prince’s wife, was buried here. Her tomb, discovered in 1961, contained precious objects, confirming the monastery’s status as a princely residence. ## Innovative Architectural Features The church is distinguished by its adherence to the Moldavian architectural style of the mid-16th century while introducing novel elements. Unlike earlier churches, Galata features two towers and three windows on each apse, a constructive solution that would influence the future evolution of religious edifices in Moldavia. The interior is divided into five distinct chambers: the altar apse, the nave, the tomb chamber (gropnița), the narthex, and the porch. A remarkable innovation is the replacement of the dividing wall between the nave and the tomb chamber with arcades supported by columns, marking its first appearance in local religious architecture. Over time, the church underwent significant transformations. In 1735, a stone wall was erected around it, and during the reign of Mihail Sturdza, a bell tower was added. A devastating fire in 1762 destroyed the original frescoes and iconostasis, leaving only the stone structure, which was restored in 1961. ## Brief Visitor’s Guide Galata Monastery Church is located at 4 Mănăstirii Street in Iași’s historic district.
