## Golești Museum Complex – History and Tradition on the Banks of the Doamnei River ## A Museum Complex with Centuries-Old Roots Situated on the left bank of the Doamnei River in the town of Ștefănești, the Golești Museum Complex spans 14 hectares and comprises two distinct sections: the Museum of History and Ethnography and the Museum of Viticulture and Pomiculture. Accessible via National Road DN7, just 10 km from Pitești, the site blends architectural heritage with ethnographic treasures, offering a journey through the history and traditions of Muntenia. ## The Golescu Manor – A Fortress and Symbol of Romanian Culture At the heart of the complex lies the Golescu Manor, a fortified ensemble built between 1641 and 1642, unique in Romania for its secular and defensive character. Adjacent to it are the Golescu Church (1646) and a commemorative cross, completing the ensemble. The manor’s interior houses original furniture, tapestries, and portraits of the Golescu family, alongside a collection of glass icons. It also hosts the first free Romanian school, founded by Dinicu Golescu, where children of boyars and peasants, including girls, studied together—a groundbreaking initiative for its time. Nearby, the Pavilion of Tudor Vladimirescu commemorates the final days of freedom of the national hero, who was captured here in 1821. ## The Museum Village – A Journey Through Viticulture and Pomiculture The Museum of Viticulture and Pomiculture, established in 1966, recreates a traditional village with over 30 authentic households brought from Romania’s wine-growing and fruit-growing regions. Each ensemble includes peasant houses and specific outbuildings, such as wine cellars, hillside manors, and storage barns. Permanent exhibitions illustrate traditional occupations, from vine processing to local crafts. ## Practical Guide for Visitors The complex is open daily from 08:00 to 16:00, except on Mondays. Visitors can explore the permanent exhibitions, following routes that connect the manor, school, church, and museum village. The surrounding park, with its pathways and historic decorative elements, enhances the cultural experience.
