Despre acest obiectiv

## A Sanctuary of Nature and History in the Șureanu Mountains Grădiștea Muncelului-Cioclovina Nature Park covers 38,184 hectares in the southern part of Hunedoara County, encompassing a significant portion of the Șureanu Mountains. Designated a protected area in 2000 under Law No. 5, the park combines Carpathian biodiversity with exceptional historical remnants. It is part of the European Natura 2000 network both as a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area for birds. ## Wild Landscapes and Unique Nature Reserves The park is home to six of Hunedoara County’s most spectacular nature reserves. The Ponorâci-Cioclovina karst complex impresses with its caves and sinkholes, while the Crivadia Gorges offer dramatic views sculpted by water. The Bolii Cave and Tecuri Cave are renowned for their geological formations and bat colonies, whereas the Ohaba-Ponor Fossil Site preserves traces of prehistoric life. Beech and spruce forests, alpine meadows, and rocky cliffs provide habitats for rare species such as arnica, wolf’s-bane, and masterwort, alongside large mammals like the brown bear, lynx, and gray wolf. ## Dacian and Roman Ruins in the Heart of the Mountains The park is a true open-air museum of ancient history. Here lies Sarmizegetusa Regia, the spiritual and political capital of Dacia, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with the Dacian fortresses of Costești, Blidaru, Piatra Roșie, and Luncani-Piatra Roșie. These fortifications, built between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE, dominate the mountainous landscape with their stone walls and circular sanctuaries. Nearby, the Roman castrum at Bănița and the villa rustica at Chitid recall the period of Roman occupation, completing the region’s historical narrative. ## Access and Visitor Recommendations Access to the park is via National Road DN66, following the route Simeria – Călan – Pui – Crivadia Gorges. Visits are permitted only on marked trails, and camping is regulated, allowed only in designated areas. For exploring nature reserves and archaeological sites, it is recommended to be accompanied by local guides, who can provide details on biodiversity and the history of the Dacian fortresses. Visiting hours and fees can be consulted at local information points.
