## A Glacial Wilderness in the Heart of the Cindrel Mountains Great Iezer Lake lies hidden on the northern slope of the Cindrel Plateau, at an altitude of 1,998 meters, making it one of the most spectacular natural formations in the Cindrel Mountains. Its glacial origin lends it an air of mystery, as it was shaped by the slow movements of glaciers that sculpted the landscape thousands of years ago. The glacial cirque in which it formed still bears traces of this primordial force, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the geological processes that shaped the Carpathians. ## A Mirror of Water Amidst the Mountains Covering an area of 3.4 hectares, the lake impresses with its dimensions: 320 meters in length and 190 meters in width. Its maximum depth of 13.3 meters is reached in the southern part, where the steep floor of the glacial cirque drops abruptly. Its crystal-clear waters reflect the towering peaks of the Cindrel Mountains, creating a landscape of almost unreal beauty. On clear days, the lake becomes a magnet for hikers exploring the area, offering an ideal spot for rest and contemplation. ## Access and Visitor Recommendations To reach Great Iezer Lake, the trail starts from the city of Sibiu or nearby mountain resorts, following marked paths that traverse coniferous forests and alpine meadows. The route is accessible during the warm season, between June and October, when weather conditions allow for a safe ascent. Proper hiking gear is recommended, including sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing, as the weather can change rapidly at this altitude. The lake serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the Cindrel Plateau and neighboring peaks, providing an authentic experience in the heart of the Carpathians' wild nature.
