Despre acest obiectiv
## A Symbol of Iași's Jewish Heritage Located on Synagogues Street in the heart of Iași, the Great Synagogue is the oldest Jewish place of worship in Romania, built between 1657 and 1671. The edifice was constructed on the site of the former Aron Vodă Monastery, marking the presence of a prosperous Jewish community in medieval Moldavia. Over the centuries, the synagogue became a reference point for both Sephardic and Ashkenazi rites, reflecting the cultural diversity of the region's Jewish population. ## Architecture and Constructive Details The building combines influences from religious architecture in Bohemia, Poland, and Russia, resulting in a unique style adapted to the local context. Its thick walls, approximately one meter wide, and a height of 22 meters give the edifice an imposing presence. The main hall, designed in the Baroque style, is structured into two vaulted naves separated by a central arch supporting the bimah, framed by traditional candelabras. The altar, carved and gilded, is made of wood, adding a touch of refinement to the interior. Above the narthex, a mezzanine level was reserved for women, in accordance with Jewish traditions. ## Restorations and Historical Significance The Great Synagogue has undergone several restoration works, the most significant taking place in 1761 under the reign of Mihai Racoviță, then in 1822 and 1914. During the interwar period, Iași was home to 122 Jewish houses of prayer, but today the Great Synagogue remains the only functional one in Moldavia. This fact enhances its historical and spiritual value, transforming it into a symbol of resilience and continuity for the Jewish community in the region. ## Visitor's Guide The Great Synagogue can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with free admission, though donations are welcome for the upkeep of the site. Visitors are kindly asked to respect the conduct rules specific to a place of worship, and guided tours can be arranged with prior booking. The building is situated in the historic center of Iași, just a few minutes' walk from other major tourist attractions, such as the Palace of Culture or the Three Hierarchs Church.
