Despre acest obiectiv
## A Symbol of Sibiu’s 16th-Century Fortifications The Gunpowder Tower stands quietly on Ocnei Street, at number 33, serving as one of the enduring witnesses to the resilience and defensive ingenuity of medieval Sibiu. Built in the mid-16th century, it was part of the city’s fourth ring of fortifications, constructed to counter the advancements in siege techniques and increasingly powerful artillery. Its essential role was to store gunpowder, a strategic resource in the defense of the citadel. ## Architecture Adapted to New Military Challenges The circular shape of the tower is no coincidence. Designed to withstand artillery fire, this design minimized the impact of projectiles and offered superior structural resistance compared to polygonal or rectangular towers. The thick walls, built from stone and brick, reflect a careful consideration of durability and functionality. Though modest in size, the Gunpowder Tower perfectly illustrates the adaptation of military architecture to the new realities of Renaissance warfare. ## Access and Visitor Recommendations The Gunpowder Tower is located in the historic center of Sibiu, just a few minutes’ walk from the Grand Square (Piața Mare), making it easily accessible on foot. While the interior is not permanently open to the public, its exterior can be admired during a stroll through the city’s fortified areas. For a complete experience, visitors can combine their exploration of the tower with nearby attractions such as the Council Tower, the Evangelical Church, or the ASTRA Museum. A stop at one of the local cafés or restaurants perfectly complements a journey into Sibiu’s medieval history.
