## Gurghiu Fortress – A Medieval Fortification in the Heart of Mureș Gurghiu Fortress stands on a gentle hill in the center of Daneș village, at an altitude of 50 meters, dominating the rural landscape of the Gurghiu Valley. Built during the Middle Ages, the fortification was largely destroyed during the siege of 1708, when its ruins served as a source of materials for constructing the castle to the north, local houses, and a Roman Catholic chapel. Although time and subsequent interventions have erased many of its traces, the fortress still preserves significant elements that allow for a partial reconstruction of its original structure. ## Architecture and Preserved Elements From the old medieval fortress, the enclosure walls, reaching heights of up to 8 meters, and an impressive southeastern fragment, which in some sections rises to 15 meters, can still be seen today. On the northwest side, the foundations of two bastions stand at approximately 4-5 meters, suggesting a well-planned defensive system. To the west, a defensive ditch separates the fortress’s end from the main courtyard, while two buttresses reinforce the wall structure. The medieval access road, still visible, offers insight into how the fortress was connected to the surrounding territory. An engraving by architect M. Visconti from the 18th century allows for an imaginary reconstruction of the ensemble, providing valuable clues about the fortification’s original appearance. ## Access and Current Research Gurghiu Fortress is accessible to visitors, who can explore the ruins and remaining architectural elements while enjoying a panoramic view of the village and its surroundings. Currently, the site is the focus of archaeological research and systematic excavations aimed at fully uncovering the fortress’s structure and revealing new details about its history and functionality. These efforts contribute to the preservation and enhancement of an important historical monument for the local and regional heritage.
