## A Symbol of the Saxon Community in Gușterița The Gușterița Fortified Evangelical Church ensemble is one of the most valuable testimonies of Saxon heritage in Sibiu County. Built in the 14th century, the site served as both a spiritual center and a defensive stronghold for the local community, reflecting the traditions and ingenuity of medieval builders. Over time, the church underwent modifications and expansions but retained its core Gothic architectural essence, combined with defensive elements characteristic of the region. ## Architecture and Fortifications Originally constructed in the Gothic style, the church features a rectangular nave and a polygonal choir, typical of the period. The bell tower, added later, dominates the ensemble’s silhouette and served as both an observation point and a final refuge during sieges. Thick walls, narrow windows, and battlements reveal the building’s dual function: religious and military. Inside, the net vault and intricately carved pulpit stand as testaments to the craftsmanship of local artisans. The fortifications surrounding the church include an enclosure wall with corner towers and a defensive moat, now partially preserved. These structures were essential in protecting the community during Ottoman invasions and medieval conflicts. ## Visitor Guide The ensemble is located in the center of Gușterița village, approximately 5 km northwest of Sibiu, accessible via county road DJ106A.
