Despre acest obiectiv
## Holy Trinity Monument – A Symbol of Timișoara’s Resilience ## A Monument of Hope Raised After the Plague Epidemic The Holy Trinity Monument, also known as the Plague Column, dominates Union Square in Timișoara as a symbol of the city’s resilience in the face of 18th-century calamities. Erected between 1755 and 1758, the monument commemorates the end of the plague epidemic that decimated one-sixth of the Banat region’s population. The foundation stone was laid in 1740, and the ensemble was crafted in Viennese workshops before being transported via the Danube, Tisa, and Bega Canal to the heart of the city. Initially located elsewhere, the monument was later moved to its current position in Union Square, where it became a landmark of local identity. ## Baroque Architecture and Profound Symbolism Designed in the Baroque style, the monument impresses with its elegance and complexity. The column, sculpted from sandstone, is crowned by a statuary group representing the Holy Trinity: the Father and the Son hold the celestial crown above the Virgin Mary, who kneels at their feet. At the base of the column, smaller statues of Saints John Nepomuk, Rosalia, King David, and Barbara complete the religious ensemble. The triangular pedestal is guarded by figures of Saints Roch, Sebastian, and Charles Borromeo, protectors against disease, while bas-reliefs on the three sides depict the calamities that marked Banat: war, famine, and plague. ## Short Visitor’s Guide The Holy Trinity Monument is located in the center of Union Square, accessible from any point in Timișoara’s historic center. Visitors can admire the sculptural details up close, and the area is ideal for walks and photography, surrounded by historic buildings such as the Episcopal Cathedral and the Baroque Palace. The monument is illuminated in the evening, offering a unique atmosphere. Entry is free, and the site can be visited at any time of day, making it a must-see on the city’s cultural itinerary.
