## A Place of Remembrance for Horea’s Uprising In the village of Fericet in Alba County, the **Horea Memorial House** keeps alive the memory of one of the most important leaders of the 1784 peasant uprising. Although the original home where Vasile Ursu Nicola, known as Horea, was born no longer exists, a traditional wooden house has been constructed here to host a small museum dedicated to the events that shaped Transylvania’s history. The exhibition recreates the atmosphere of the 18th century, showcasing documents, artifacts, and testimonies about the lives and struggles of oppressed peasants, as well as Horea’s role in organizing the social liberation movement. Near the memorial house, an obelisk erected in 1934 marks the site where Horea’s former home once stood. The monument bears three key dates: the year of his birth (1730), his capture (1784), and his execution by breaking on the wheel (1785), a symbol of the brutal repression by Habsburg authorities. Beside it, an ancient ash tree, known as the **"Horea’s Ash,"** adds a touch of authenticity to the site. According to tradition, the tree was planted by Horea himself, making it as historically significant as the **"Horea’s Oak"** in Țebea. ## Architecture and Access The memorial house is a modest construction, typical of the ethnographic region of the Apuseni Mountains, with log walls and a gabled roof. The museum’s interior is organized into several rooms, where visitors can explore exhibits related to 18th-century rural life, weapons and tools used by the rebels, and reproductions of period documents. Access is via county road DJ750C, with Fericet located approximately 20 kilometers from Alba Iulia.
