Despre acest obiectiv
## Ieud Wooden Church – The Oldest Wooden Church in Maramureș Located in the heart of the village of Ieud, the wooden church dedicated to the "Nativity of the Virgin Mary" is considered the oldest in Maramureș, built in 1364 by the noble Balea family. Over the centuries, this monument has fascinated historians and ethnographers with its construction techniques and artistic richness, becoming a symbol of Romanian cultural heritage. In 1999, it was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, alongside other Maramureș wooden churches, recognized for its historical and spiritual value. ## Architecture and Painting – Mastery in Wood and Color While the exterior impresses with its simplicity, the interior of the church reveals a vibrant world dominated by sculptures and mural paintings of rare beauty. With generous dimensions for its time—7.15 meters in width and 11.87 meters in length—the church could accommodate up to 340 worshippers. The structure is traditionally divided into three rooms: the women’s narthex (pronaos), the men’s nave, and the altar. The paintings, attributed to the itinerant master Alexandru Ponehalschi, cover the walls entirely, astonishing with their variety of themes, compositional complexity, and vivid color palette. Although the exact date of the mural restoration remains uncertain, experts place it around 1765. ## Short Visitor’s Guide The church is situated in the center of Ieud village, accessible via county road DJ186, approximately 50 kilometers from Sighetu Marmației. The visiting schedule is seasonally adjusted, and access is granted for a modest fee, which contributes to the monument’s upkeep. Visitors are kindly asked to maintain silence and avoid touching the paintings to preserve them intact. A visit here offers not only a lesson in history and art but also an authentic spiritual experience, characteristic of historic Maramureș.
