Despre acest obiectiv
## A spectacle of nature between cliffs and waters The Iron Gates Gorge represents one of the most impressive natural creations in southwestern Romania, sculpted by the Danube over millions of years through the Locva and Almăj Mountains, as well as the Mehedinți Plateau. Its name, also derived from the Hungarian *Vaskapu* ("Iron Gate"), evokes the immensity and power of the landscape, where the river narrows between steep walls, creating a wild and breathtaking natural corridor. Alternatively, the final section of the gorge is also known as the Danube Gorge, a term that underscores its dramatic character. ## A journey through gorges and history The gorge begins beyond the island of Moldova Veche, where the Danube first narrows near Golubac on the Serbian bank. Here, a medieval fortress guards the entrance to this labyrinth of cliffs, a testament to the region's strategic importance over the centuries. Through the Ljupovska Valley, the river enters the second gorge, Gospodin Vir, stretching 15 km long with a minimum width of 220 m. The towering ridges, reaching up to 500 m, add even more grandeur to the landscape. The connection between the Great Kazan and the Small Kazan is provided by the wider area near Donji Milanovac, but the true jewel of the gorge is the Great Kazan. Here, the Danube reaches its narrowest point—just 150 m—and an impressive depth of 53 m, creating a landscape of almost mythical power. The Small Kazan, though less spectacular, completes this journey through a unique natural setting in Europe. ## Guide for explorers To discover the Iron Gates Gorge, the best option is a journey along the Danube, either by boat or ferry, offering a direct perspective of the cliffs and tumultuous waters. On the Romanian side, National Road DN57 follows the river’s course, allowing stops at key points such as the Great Kazan, where the view is unforgettable. Visitors can also explore the Golubac Fortress, accessible by crossing into Serbia, or hike in the surrounding area, where trails along the Danube’s banks reveal wild and unspoiled landscapes. A must-visit stop is the Iron Gates Dam, an impressive engineering feat that transformed part of the gorge into a reservoir without diminishing the area’s natural beauty. Regardless of the season, the Iron Gates Gorge remains a fascinating destination, where history, nature, and mythology intertwine in a peerless landscape.
