## The Legend and History of Kálnoky Castle Kálnoky Castle in Micloșoara traces its origins to the 16th century, when it was initially built as a hunting lodge. Legend has it that the Kálnoky family name is linked to a 13th-century episode in which a Székely man named Kalnoky saved the life of the King of Hungary during a hunting expedition. As a reward, he was ennobled and granted the estate in Micloșoara, where the lodge was later constructed. The family’s coat of arms, featuring a bear pierced by an arrow, commemorates this event. Over the centuries, the building underwent numerous transformations, blending distinct architectural styles. Archaeological excavations have revealed that its foundation is built from medieval stone, suggesting continuity of settlement. The current architecture combines Baroque, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements, reflecting the tastes and influences of the eras it has endured. ## Architecture and Restoration The castle impresses with its eclectic elegance, featuring ornate façades, tall windows, and decorative details characteristic of the Baroque style. The interior preserves period furniture, tapestries, and art objects that evoke the grandeur of noble life. In 1919, the then-owner lost the lodge in a game of poker to a Romanian, an event that marked a turning point in the building’s fate. After decades of abandonment, the castle was restored and reopened to the public, becoming a popular destination. Among its notable visitors was Prince Charles of the United Kingdom, who spent two nights here during a visit to Romania. Today, the property belongs to Tibor Kálnoky, a descendant of a family with an impressive history—his father, Gustav Kálnoky, was an Austro-Hungarian diplomat and served as foreign minister for 14 years. ## Visitor’s Guide Kálnoky Castle is open to tourists year-round, with seasonal visiting hours.
