## A Historical Oasis in the Heart of Maramureș The Maramureș County Museum of History and Archaeology opens its doors in the building at 1-3 Monetăriei Street, in the center of Baia Mare, becoming an essential cultural landmark for the region since its inauguration on June 19, 1954. Initially established in 1951 under the name Regional Museum of Baia Mare, the institution also coordinated, starting in 1954, the district museums in Satu Mare and Sighet, as well as the town museum in Baia Sprie, solidifying its role as a guardian of collective memory. ## Exceptional Heritage and Collections With a collection exceeding 70,000 items, the museum houses diverse exhibits structured into sections on archaeology, history, technology, and a specialized library. The permanent exhibitions illustrate the historical evolution of the area beginning in the 14th century, offering visitors a captivating journey into Maramureș’s past. The archaeology section reveals traces of ancient human settlements dating back to prehistory, while the medieval exhibits—including the city’s broadsword, swords, sabers, and chainmail—recreate the warrior and craftsmanship atmosphere of bygone eras. A highlight is the collection of guild seals, which bring to the forefront the economic and social dynamics of the region, highlighting the role of craftsmen in the urban development of Baia Mare. ## Practical Visitor Information The museum is open from Monday to Thursday, between 10:00 AM and 3:30 PM, and on Fridays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Located near the historic center, the building is easily accessible for both passing tourists and those wishing to deepen their knowledge of Maramureș’s heritage. A visit here offers an opportunity to discover the hidden stories of a region with a strong cultural identity, carefully preserved over the centuries.
