## A Catholic Spiritual Oasis in the Heart of Banat The Maria Radna Franciscan Basilica stands in the town of Lipova, 30 kilometers from Arad, and is the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in Romania. Founded by Franciscan monks in the 16th century, the monastery became a symbol of faith and resilience against the trials of history. The current church, built in the 18th century, bears the mark of Central European Baroque, reflecting the cultural influences of the Habsburg Empire. ## Architecture and Artistic Treasures The building impresses with its sober elegance, featuring simple yet well-proportioned facades. The interior houses true masterpieces: the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, saved from the 1695 fire caused by the Turks, is framed by a monumental silver setting crafted in 1770 by Josef Moser, the official goldsmith of the imperial court in Vienna. The main altar, sculpted in white Carrara marble in 1895 by the Hungarian artist Toth Istvan, completes the sacred ensemble. The church’s ceiling, painted in 1762 by the Viennese artist Ferdinand Schiessl, and the three-meter-tall statues of Saints James and Anne, created by the Tyrolean sculptor Ferdinand Stuefflesser, add brilliance to the space. The organ, built in 1905 by the firm "Leopold Wegenstein and Sons," one of the most prestigious of its time, accompanies services with harmonious sounds. ## Pilgrimage Center and Liturgical Life In 1992, Pope John Paul II granted the church the title of *Basilica Minor*, recognizing its spiritual importance. The feast of "Our Lady of Graces" attracts thousands of believers annually, especially on the feast of Saint Mary, when pilgrimages transform the town into a place of prayer and reflection. Sunday liturgies are celebrated in Romanian, Hungarian, and German, reflecting the diversity of the local community. Accessible year-round, the basilica can be visited daily, offering a refuge of peace and contemplation. The journey to Lipova, traversing the picturesque landscapes of Banat, completes the spiritual and cultural experience of this historic site.
