Despre acest obiectiv
## A Sanctuary of Faith on the Banks of the Mureș Maria Radna Monastery stands as a symbol of Catholic spirituality in western Romania, on the outskirts of Lipova, in Arad County. Perched on a hill overlooking the Mureș Valley, the monastery is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the region, attracting both the faithful and tourists eager to discover its history and architectural beauty. ## History and Spiritual Significance The origins of the monastery date back to the 16th century, when a small wooden church was built here by Franciscan monks. Tradition holds that in 1668, an icon of the Virgin Mary, brought from Naples, was placed in the church and quickly became an object of veneration due to the miracles attributed to it. In 1750, the icon was declared miraculous by Pope Benedict XIV, solidifying the monastery’s status as a pilgrimage site. Over the centuries, the monastery has been rebuilt and expanded, reflecting the evolution of architectural styles and its growing importance. ## Architecture and Heritage The current basilica, constructed between 1906 and 1911, is a remarkable example of Neo-Gothic architecture with Baroque influences. Its imposing façade, featuring twin towers and ornate rose windows, dominates the local landscape. The interior impresses with its high vaults, colorful stained glass, and intricately carved altars, while the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary occupies a central place in the dedicated chapel. The monastery also houses a museum with religious art objects, ancient manuscripts, and ex-votos left by pilgrims over the years. ## Visitor Guide Maria Radna Monastery is accessible year-round, with visiting hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Access is via county road DJ709 from Lipova or Arad, and parking is available near the complex. Visitors can attend religious services or explore the monastery’s museum, which offers insight into the history and local traditions. For pilgrims, the monastery organizes special events in August, during the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
