## Micia Roman Fort – A Roman Dacia Outpost Perched on the high terrace of the Mureș River, near the present-day town of Vețel in Hunedoara County, the Micia Roman Fort was one of the most important military and civilian sites of the Roman province of Dacia. Built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan, the fortification served as a garrison for Roman auxiliary units, ensuring control over trade routes and the gold-rich region of the Apuseni Mountains. ## Architecture and Defensive Structure The Micia Fort covered an area of approximately 20 hectares, making it one of the largest in Roman Dacia. The enclosure walls, constructed from stone and brick, reached up to 1.5 meters in thickness and were reinforced with defensive towers at the corners and along the sides. Inside, the typical structures of a Roman fort—principia (headquarters), horreum (provisions depot), soldiers' barracks, and thermae (baths)—were arranged according to a rigorous plan, characteristic of Roman military architecture. Outside the walls, a civilian settlement (vicus) developed, featuring craft workshops, dwellings, and a temple dedicated to the god Mithras, discovered during archaeological excavations. ## Access and Visiting The ruins of Micia Roman Fort are located about 4 kilometers west of the city of Hunedoara, along county road DJ708A, in the direction of Deva. Visitors can freely explore the archaeological site, where the remains of walls and foundations are marked and partially restored. Nearby, the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization in Deva provides additional context about the province's history, including artifacts discovered at Micia. For a complete experience, it is recommended to combine the visit with an exploration of the medieval Hunedoara Citadel, just 10 minutes away by car.
