## Moldovenești Citadel – An Early Medieval Fortification Moldovenești Citadel, also known as Turda Citadel, stands on a hill in the namesake commune, at the foothills of the Apuseni Mountains. It is one of the oldest fortified structures in medieval Transylvania, built on the foundation of a Roman castrum that oversaw the gold trade route in the area. This layering of historical periods gives it a unique status in the region's historical landscape. ## From Earthen Ramparts to Stone Walls Initially constructed by the local Romanian population, the citadel was later taken over by the Hungarian royal administration. The first phase of the fortification consisted of an earthen rampart surrounded by a deep ditch, a defensive solution typical of the 11th century. In the 12th century, the structure was reinforced with stone walls, marking the transition to a more robust military architecture. Although the Tatar invasions of the 13th century led to the citadel's near-total destruction, its traces remain visible today. On the southern side, a ditch can be observed, which likely served as the main entrance. ## A Short Visitor’s Guide The ruins of Moldovenești Citadel are accessible on foot from the center of the commune. Though few in number, the remains offer insight into medieval defensive strategies and the site's importance within Transylvania's network of fortifications. The area is ideal for history enthusiasts and those looking to explore an authentic archaeological site, far from tourist crowds. A stop here perfectly complements a trip to the surroundings of Turda or the Apuseni Mountains.
