## A Unique Ecosystem in the Heart of Dobrogea The **Movile Cave and Obanul Mare Nature Reserve** is located in the northwest of the municipality of Mangalia, within the administrative territory of Constanța, representing one of Romania’s most fascinating protected areas. Covering 12 hectares, it combines speleological and geomorphological values, offering a distinctive landscape formed by a circular depression with a diameter of 100-150 meters, bordered by Sarmatian limestone. Above the cave rise the *obane*—rare geomorphological formations sculpted by time into the rock, adding a unique charm to the reserve. The vegetation is adapted to arid conditions, consisting of xerophytic and ruderal species, while the surface fauna includes rodents, birds, and reptiles. ## A Subterranean World Based on Chemosynthesis **Movile Cave** is the centerpiece of the reserve, being the only terrestrial ecosystem in Romania that functions exclusively through chemosynthesis. Discovered in 1986, it harbors a unique cave-dwelling fauna composed of thermophilic and thiophilic organisms, many of which are endemic. These "living fossils" have evolved in isolation, adapting to an environment devoid of light and rich in sulfides, where energy does not come from photosynthesis but from chemical reactions.
