## Nămaiești Monastery – A Rock-Hewn Treasure of Muscel Tucked away in the picturesque landscape of Nămaiești village, just 5 kilometers northeast of Câmpulung, Nămaiești Monastery is one of Romania’s oldest and most enigmatic monastic settlements. Entirely carved into rock, the church is part of a "mysterious triangle" of medieval spirituality, alongside Corbii de Piatră Monastery and Cetățuia Negru Vodă, all located roughly 20 kilometers apart. While no documents precisely date its founding, local legends attribute its establishment to Negru Vodă, and the first written mentions appear in charters of rulers Radu the Great (1503) and Mircea the Shepherd (1547), placing the monument in the 14th century. ## Architecture and Sacred Symbolism The rock-hewn church impresses with its simplicity and authenticity. Carved directly into limestone, the structure preserves archaic elements characteristic of early Romanian Christian places of worship. The interior is modest yet rich in symbolism: the nave, narthex, and altar are all hewn from stone, while the natural rock vault adds a mystical atmosphere. The patron saints – "The Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple" and "The Healing Spring" – reflect the deep faith in the divine power of the site. One of the monastery’s most precious objects is the icon of the Mother of God with the Infant Jesus, considered miraculous. Tradition holds that it was painted by Saint Luke the Apostle, making it one of the oldest icons in Christendom, though time has left visible marks upon it. ## Legends and Monastic Traditions The monastery’s founding is closely tied to a haunting legend. It is said that three shepherds, sheltering with their flock one night on the rock where the church now stands, all dreamed the same vision: an angel revealed to them an icon hidden in the stone, depicting the true likeness of the Mother of God. After the dream recurred three times, the Virgin Mary appeared to them in person, instructing them to carve a place of worship where they would find the icon. She also commanded that the number of nuns should always be 33 – symbolizing the years Jesus lived on earth. Today, the monastery is inhabited by nuns, keeping this centuries-old tradition alive. ## Visitor’s Guide Nămaiești Monastery is easily accessible from Câmpulung Muscel via county road DJ735. Though it lacks modern tourist facilities, its charm lies in its authenticity and tranquility. Visitors are greeted by an atmosphere of reflection, ideal for prayer or meditation.
