## A Orthodox jewel in the heart of Bucovina The Nativity of the Lord Cathedral in Suceava is one of the most important Orthodox places of worship in northern Moldova, built in the 20th century to serve as the episcopal seat of the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți. Though it is not part of the ancient treasure of medieval Moldavian churches, the edifice impresses with its dimensions and the harmony of its neo-Byzantine style, adapted to local traditions. ## Architecture and symbolism Construction of the cathedral began in 1991 under the supervision of architect Constantin Gorcea and was completed in 2010, when it was consecrated by Patriarch Daniel. The building’s plan follows the Byzantine tradition, featuring a tall central nave flanked by two lateral apses and an open narthex. The main dome, standing 40 meters high, dominates the city’s skyline and is visible from a distance. The interior frescoes, executed in the traditional technique, blend motifs from Orthodox iconography with modern elements, creating a solemn and welcoming atmosphere. The carved and polychrome wooden iconostasis, along with the liturgical furniture, are crafted in the neo-Byzantine style, incorporating influences from Bucovinian folk art. ## Visitor’s guide The cathedral is located in the heart of Suceava, at 1 Ștefan cel Mare Street, just a few minutes’ walk from other major tourist attractions such as the Seat Fortress of Suceava and the Bucovina Museum. Visiting hours are aligned with religious services: Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Saturday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Admission is free, though visitors are asked to maintain the quiet and decorum appropriate for a place of worship. Inside, it is recommended to admire the intricate frescoes and the light filtered through the colorful stained-glass windows, which lend the space a unique atmosphere. Additionally, the cathedral’s courtyard features a monument dedicated to the nation’s heroes, a place for reflection and homage.
