Despre acest obiectiv
## Negru Vodă Monastery – Cradle of Romanian History and Culture Located at 64 Negru Vodă Street in Câmpulung Muscel, Negru Vodă Monastery is the most important monastic complex in the Muscel region. Founded in 1215 by Radu Negru Voivode, the legendary founder of Wallachia, the monastery was rebuilt by Basarab I and his son, Nicolae Alexandru, before being reconstructed from the ground up by Matei Basarab following the 1628 earthquake. Since then, it has become a key spiritual and cultural landmark, preserving the memory of the first voivodes of the unified feudal state. ## Architecture and Notable Monuments The monastic complex comprises several valuable buildings, each bearing the imprint of the era in which it was constructed. The main church, dedicated to the "Dormition of the Mother of God," originally served as the princely chapel of the voivodal court, while the smaller church, known as the infirmary, dates back to the early 18th century. The 35-meter-tall bell tower, built from brick and river stone, impresses with its battlements and defensive role during the 17th century. The Princely House also dates from the same period, while the cells and annexes were added in the 19th century. A significant moment in the monastery’s history occurred during the reign of Constantin Brâncoveanu, who enriched the complex with a new abbot’s residence, located on the northern side of the bell tower. This building reflects the Brâncovenesc style, characterized by elegance and refinement. ## Center of Culture and Education Negru Vodă Monastery was not only a place of prayer but also a beacon of Romanian culture. In 1642, the first book in the Romanian language with moral-philosophical content, "Teachings for Every Day, Briefly," was printed here—a major milestone in the history of Romanian writing. Additionally, in 1669, the monastery hosted the first school to teach in Romanian, accessible to the children of the poor as well as those of the boyars. It also housed a school of scribes, contributing to the transmission and preservation of knowledge. ## Access and Visiting The monastery is located in the historic center of Câmpulung Muscel, easily accessible to both pilgrims and tourists. The visiting schedule is adapted to the needs of worshippers, and local guides provide details about the history and significance of each monument. In the monastery courtyard, visitors can admire the tombs of Voivodes Basarab I and Nicolae Alexandru, founders of Wallachia, whose presence lends the site a unique historical resonance.
